Hi,

I've been having a big problem with windows update. For one, I can't even
turn windows update on. I get an error message when trying to enable it in
the Security Center: "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your
Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these yourself, go to System in
Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended),
and the click OK." I tried doing that and there was'nt even an "Automatic
Updates" tab there. When I try click the Automatic Updates ICON in security
center it does'nt ever open.

So I try updating from the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site and I always get
the error 0x8DDD0004 when I try to update. Tried all the steps the site says
to resolve this problem, clear temporary internet files, delted cookies,
etc., and nothing works. Also went to Tools>Manage add-ons and WUWebControl
Class was Enabled.

Tried reregistering the DLL files and all succeeded except the wuaueng.dll
file. I got the error "wuaueng.dll" is not an executable file and no
registration helper is registered for this type.

I even tried going into the registry and looked for the auoptions,
disablewindowsupdateaccess, and noautoupdate values. And the path,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \
WindowsUpdate \ AU does'nt even exist in there. Neither does
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \
WindowsUpdate \ AU.

Last I downloaded the reinstall from
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe
and got an error: "The application failed to initialez properly
(0xc000007b). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Im using XP Home Edition SP2. I had a virus and a lot of spyware that may
have caused this problem.

PLEASE HELP

Thanks

"ipconfig /flushdns" is a command, type it at the command prompt (start
/run and type "cmd" (without quotes)

If it doesn't help please, take a look to this KB article

I have had the same problem for quite some time and have read many of these
posts and reports, none of them are true and/or work for me. This error code
must be a catch all for many other issues. It would be nice if MS provided a
patch to automatically fix this issue (what ever it is).
