Hi

Upon downloading and installing (and rebooting) the above windows update my
sounds device (avance ac97 audio) disappears and the sound scheme shows Modem
#0 Line playback (as default device for both recording and playback), and
MPU-401 (as default device for midi playback)...resulting in 'no audio
device' being shown under volume in 'sounds and audio device
properties'.....net result no sound!
This has occured three times forcing a system restore to correct.

Anybody know how to correct/fix, is this a know bug.

Appreciate any input.

regards

Lethal

As is said many times, do NOT use winupdate for drivers.
Use hw manu.drivers direct from their web site.
BTW There are many that say if it aint broke dont fix it. ie unless a hw
updated driver fixes a problem,dont

Thanks for that, DL, but excuse the lack of experience in reviewing this
forum and the naiviety regarding drivers.

What is 'HW' By the way.

I do like to keep my version of xp totally up to date...so ignoring these
updates is difficult, espec as msoft recommend and encourage soo much.

i had to go back to a restore point.
what is this audio device mainly used for? otherwise it may not be necessary
to update it.

Its rarely neccessary to update a driver unless
1) it cures a problem
2) adds functionality
Its on board sound driver
In any case do NOT use winupdate drivers - you now know why

Then i obviously must already have this device which apparently needs to be
updated. Did you use a different site to update this device?

You dont *need* to update unless you have a problem or it adds extra
functionality.
Just because an update might be available doesnt mean you need to.

The device is a sound device, either you have an embedded sound device on
your mobo, or you have a sound card.
If you really wish to update visit your mobo, or PC manu, or sound card site
and see what updates are avilable.
Winupdate has a habit of showing incorrect drivers, corrupt drivers, and
drivers with an incorrect version designation.

Thanks. i'll hold off on this update.....
by the way has anyone else benefited from the recent ms update that fixed
that problem where you would get a svchost.exe error when you power on your
pc? Those annoying error msgs are finally gone!
