80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND. Corrupted System File

IF this is Vista, it could be that the Windows Update Agent/Client is
attempting to update itself and some 'thing' is preventing it.
Give this a shot -
Open an Elevated Command Prompt

Click the Start button button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt,
and then, in the list of results, *right-click* Command Prompt, and then
click 'Run as Administrator'. Follow the prompts.
At the Command Prompt type in these commands, pressing Enter after each one:

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltux.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if it will update now.
If it doesn't, see if running the System File Checker resolves this issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

If not, then you *may* have to do an in-place upgrade or reinstall of
the OS.

It *may* be that the system is attempting to update the Windows Update
Agent/Client and security software is preventing this from completing.

Download and save the latest Version, 7.0.6000.381

Windows x86 [32 bit]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe

Windows x64 [64 bit]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x64.exe

Before installing it, close the browser and any other programs.
Then go to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste the below]

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
*Right* click the downloaded file and choose 'Run as Administrator'
Follow the prompts.

Install with /wuforce if the message pops up stating the WUA is already
installed.
To do so instead of right clicking the file, go to Start > Run >
Browse to the file's location.
Click once on it to highlight it, than click Open
Click once in the Open: line to highlight it, then push the End key on
the keyboard.
Push the Space bar once and type in /wuforce
This will create a space after WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Click OK.
Restart the system no matter which method was used to install WUA.

I tried the command prompt series but it didn't work.

I ran SFC and it says:
"Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt
files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included inthe CBS.Log"

The CBS file dated today just after completion is a Text document size
11,010 KB and Notebook says "access denied"

The CheckSUR file in the CBS folder is dates 1 hour earlier (when I was
trying other solutions) and it is openable (1KB)

It says

Checking System Update Readiness.
Version 6.0.6001.22201

Checking Deployment Packages

Checking Package Manifests and catalogs.

Checking package watchlist.
