Windows update causes failure

last nite i downloaded and installed the windows update, mainly comprising of
security changes only to find on restarting the computer a windows firewall
program started after this had been closed down i tried to open other
programs eg. interntet explorer etc to find that nothing would open not even
my computer, even will not open the system restore program! how do i fix
this, ill never do an update again.
