Windows Update Causing Shutdown to be Disabled

I have about 300 computers running windows XP on a corporate domain. there
is something in windows update causing problems shutting down windows. when
you go to shut down the computer, the only option that is listed is log off
computer. additionally, if you send the computer a shutdown command, like
when software is installed and it asks if you would like to shut the computer
down, it wont work. to shut the computer down, what has to be done, is first
the user has to log off, then the user can shut down from there.

also, for some reason, these users can not run windows updates, it always
fails, even when they are local administrators. to run the updates, a domain
admin needs to log into the machine and run it.

after these updates have been run, then the shutdown option comes back for
the users.

has anyone seen this problem before?

Hey,

To me it sounds like a either a domain group policy or a local user group
policy. If local launch the group policy eidtor via gpedit.msc and vist the
windows update section under both user and computer config and then:

Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

And make sure "Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut
Down Windows dialog box" is set to disabled.

But more than likly its domain since you said it takes a domain admin to
install updates. So you need to go though Active Directory Users And
Computers and setup the correct local policy for local admin, etc.

Hope that helps. Not siting in fron of win2k3 atm and just trying to
remember off the top of my head.

Take Care,
Will

no, I looked in both the local and the active directory policies, there was
no setting enabled in there that would cause this issue
