Running XP on the box. It stopped working about August of 2007. I have
manually installed IE7 and a couple of other minor updates. Tried the psexec
thing and was able to install the validation but still cannot get the rest of
the updates. Ran Malicious removal tool to no avail. HELP!! It's making me
crazy.

You really have likely left out a lot of information - given how long this
has been going on for you.

Ignore the title... Try both methods, reboot after each one.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation

Doesn't work? Try the following...

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Why did you wait 7 months, you have left your system in a vulnerable state
being unpatched for so long. There's even a possibility that the system could
be infected.

Have you checked for viruses/malware etc.

Have you read this article and done the troubleshooting steps?

Did you check the windowsupdate.log for specific errors?
Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\windowsupdate.log, and then click
OK.

After feverishly working for 2 solid days to try to make my updates work, I
found your solution (the ifrst one), tried it and it worked!!! Thanks so
