Hi Robert, start with this -

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you
try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Other information:

Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons,
Zonealarm etc

Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the background
such as NetZerio, HiSpeed, Speedband etc.

Problem: Crashes or hangs etc

Internet Explorer 7 may exit immediately when it includes an add-on and you
start it in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003

Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro
Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts unexpectedly,
or you are asked to report a problem with Internet Explorer Self-help steps
for a beginning to an intermediate computer user

I have repeatedly tried to run Windows Update on a new installation of Win
XPSP2, from update.microsoft.com. It ends up with "The website has
encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view"
error number 0x80072EE2. I upgraded to IE7 and get the same problem -
except that it completely crashes IE7. I have tried:

Disabling my proxy
Disabling antivirus
Adding update.microsoft.com to my list of "trusted sites"

No luck yet. Also I've tried scheduling updates but nothing seems to
happen.
