Windows Update crashing explorer

Windows Update appears to crash Explorer on my main home PC running XP
Professional.

Otherwise Explorer works fine.

With Windows Defender I'm getting the error code 0x80245003 when I try to
update.

I have fixed this once by removing the wuredir directory but the problem has
returned and isn't fixed by that strategy any more.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Error message when you try to install updates by using the Windows Update Web site:
"0x80245003"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749/EN-US/

If that doesn't help:-
Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated next time you visit WU again)
You will lose your history but that's not important.

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

If you need to reinstall the ActiveX controls (because they may have become corrupt):-

Follow this article -
The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan for updates when
you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows XP Service
Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916259

Note: WU Client 3.0 - Windows Update Agentthe article mentions the old one)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

or for the 64 bit version
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

I'm having the same problem with XP Home. I check for updates by clicking on
"custom" and wait to see what is available. There are currently 2 updates
waiting to be installed. However when I click to "check" them to install
said updates, another "express" or "custom" install page opens up inside the
first page. Hopefully that makes sense to someone out there and I could get
some help with this problem.
I tried the solution posted by TaurArian but nothing seemed to happen.
Thanks in advance,
Steven

By the way unlike Greg, I'm not running Windows Defender. Not sure if that
makes any difference but thought I'd mention it anyway.

If you have BitComet, that might be what is causing this problem. Uninstall
BitComet and try again.

Really? BitComet has never been a problem before. However I will do what
you suggest and see what happens after that.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the link. I read a posting that said to disable "BitComet
Helper" in IE. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Thanks TaurArian,

Renaming the distribution folder sorted this out.

Cheers

So I disabled the 'BitComet" helper in IE and the updates worked as they
should.
Thanks everyone for your help.
