Windows update disabled Optical drives?

The updates of last night took away my CDR and DVDR drives. Spoke to a tech
at MS who got them back (partially). Both are read only now and will not
record. Same physical drives work fine in Win ME (dual boot machine).

Unable to call MS back as "all circuits are busy" for the past hour. Now
7:10 EDST on 10/11.
