windows update does not install no error message

I have windows xp, Sp2
I have admin rights
I go to the windows update website

hit custom updates (I don't want IE 7)
choose the updates that I want
it seems to go through the process and then it tells me that the update(s)
failed to install.

No error message.
Even if I download the update and try to install it manually, it's a
failure.

Where to go next?

Ignore the title Meg and see if this helps - Updates are not installed successfully from
Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation

I am having a similar problem. Have windows XP, go to windows update, chose
custom, select an update. It appears to download but says install failed
with no error information. I have tried different updates and get the same
result.
Went to KB943144 and tried method one. Still same failure to install update.

My question at this point is how do I find whether my system is x86, x64, or
itanium based so I can try method 2 as suggested in KB943144?

Thanks for any help.

Most likely you have X86 -

To find out if you have a 32 bit system (x86) -
Click Start, Select Run, now type in: msinfo32

Look at System Type.

Found I do have x86 based system thanks to your suggestion.

Then proceeded to try method 2 in KB943144 by downloading and saving the x86
file to my C drive. Did step 2 and after doing step 3, I got the following:
"Windows cannot find 'C:\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe/wuforce'. Make sure
you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the start buton, and then click search."

I did a search and found the file in windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe in C:\.

Can't do step 4 and 5 because of above error. Regarding step 5, what steps
and what wizard???

Hope someone can help get windows update working again. Thanks in advance

Click Start, click Run, click Browse, locate the file that you saved and then click Open.

Add the /wuforce switch to the end of the run command, and then click OK. For example, the
run command may appear as the following: "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
Click Run.

Follow the steps to complete the wizard.

Note the space between " /wuforce

Thank you, thank you.

Windows Update now is working again after following your attached message.

The clincher was your one line "Note the space between " /wuforce". I was
not inserting a space when I added the switch to the
"C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" in the run box. Such a small item to cause
me so much trouble!

Thanks again!
