Windows update does not work at all... (it's been a while as well)

I haven't been able to download updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com for
quite a long time.

I always get the same error:

"[Error number: 0x800A0046]
Please change your Internet Explorer security settings
To save changes to your settings for this website, you need to enable
userdata persistence for Internet Explorer...."

Userdate persistence is enabled. Active X is enabled. I have installed
internet explorer again. Firewall isn't interfering. I've tried all the
obvious solutions, but nothing has worked. Windows update on control panel
doesn't work either. And no, I am not running SP2.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

I think the same thing was happening to me after I "installed" the Microsoft
Updates which MS recommended us to do and use. Once I disabled it again my
Windows Update works fine. If I need other updates I go to the Office Update
site or to the Catalog.

I have found during this past year that many of the updates coming in on the
Auto Update site give problems. Either downloading or installing or giving
error messages or screwing something up on my computer.

So I have generally taken to seeing which ones are there to be updated and
then finding them either on a MS download site or go to the MS Updates
catalog http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp and get
them from there.

Another trick that works for me is to download and SAVE them first to a
folder I keep them in and then Install them one by one later. Many folks
claim you should also keep your AV off while installing and /or downloading
them.

Most of these problems started when MS offered Microsoft Updates instead of
only Windows Updates. I, in fact then disabled Microsoft Updates and only use
Windows Updates and go to Office Updates to get them seperately. My Windows
Update site works fine now but as I said often things screw up in the process
of DL and Installing the updates so I use the procedure discribved above.

Good Luck

Hi,

Three different things you can try listed here:

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you receive
the 0x800A0046 error.
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...cleid=20&ln=en

Note that if you in method 1 remove the user account from any groups,
you will need to log off and on again.

For method 2, if you are using Windows 2000 and not Windows XP, note
that SC.exe doesn't come builtin with Windows 2000. You can download
it from here:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000/
