Windows update does nothing

I get on the windows update page and go through the checking process and then
get to the page to do express or custom install. Whichever I select it just
sits there with the green bar going back and forth. I have let it sit for
more then 30 minutes and nothing else happens. What should I do?

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 and facing the same problem although the
Genuine Advantage Validation Tool is installed and passed.
Please give a hand. Thank you.
