Like many others, I am having trouble with Windows Update failing.
I get to the part where it asks me to choose Express or Custom update,
then I click on one or the other of those, and IE just sits there with
the progress bar going for several minutes, eventually giving up with
the 8024402C message.
I've tried everything I could find in this and other NGs, Microsoft's
on-line help (including
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883821), etc.,
all to no avail. Specifically:
1) Turned off the firewall (Comodo; the built-in WinXP firewall is
disabled)
2) Verified all my settings in IE's options, particularly the ones that
have to do with proxy server (I do not have a proxy server; running
"proxycfg -d" returns "Direct access (no proxy server))")
3) Connected via my wireless router + cable modem, and also connected
by my soon-to-be-defunct telephone modem (three other PCs on the same
wireless router update just fine)
4) Checked my 'hosts' file--only one non-commented entry, for
127.0.0.1.
5) Ran regsvr32 on numerous DLLs (as per one of the threads in this NG)
6) Ran virus scans (Avast) and other malware scans (including Ad-Aware
SE and SpyBot). I did run Windows Defender a week ago, but since it
wouldn't update either, I re-installed it, and now its definitions are
157 days old... (I wonder if I can download an update file on another
PC, then transfer it to this machine with a memory stick.)
7) Cleared the cache, cookies and history in IE.
8) Temporarily renamed "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution" to
"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.tmp"; IE recreated this directory, but
still no joy.
9) Stopped and re-started BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Agent);
Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services.
Pinging "download.microsoft.com" works fine (giving an IP address of
64.86.136.22 = a767.ms.akamai.net; apparently this is one of their
servers).
Everything else works fine--Firefox, TBird, even IE for everything
except Windows Update and the update for Windows Defender.
I'll append part of the WindowsUpdate.log below, with a couple comments
by me in []. One thing that appears odd to me (although I really don't
know anything about it) is that it says
...Proxy List used: <(null)> ...
but then it says
...SendRequestUsingProxy failed...
Why would it be using "SendRequestUsingProxy" if the proxy list is
empty, and I've told it I'm not behind a proxy server?
I'm running WinXP SP2, with all the updates that came out until this
problem happened a week or two ago. I do not have (as far as I know!)
an ISA server.
Any help appreciated!
Mike Maxwell
