This happens on Windows XP Service Pack 2. When downloading updates,
"Installing Updates" window stays for ever in download mode when downloading
the last item. If I move mouse pointer to the Windows download sheild
(bottom-right on the screen, next to time), it says "Downloading Updates
96%". Nothing happens after that. If I cancel the downloads and try to
download the updates again, the same thing happens. Any idea on how to fix
this?

Guessing its Automatic Updates process that's involved here. Have you checked FREE space?
What dows your WindowsUpdate.log show for the very last session-date ?

In your case, your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them.

Look at folder C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$
If you find a sub-folder named KB885835, then delete it.

Then I would suggest ( at least for one time), select Windows Update from start menus. Then at least you can observe the on-line process.

Maurice,

I have the exact same problem. I posted a thread "Systems hangs while
downloading an update" where I am getting the same error. I've also posted my
log there.

I did try your suggestion #1: clearing the
windows/softwaredistribution/download folder. Could not follow #2: Look at
folder C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ as I don't have any folders staring with $...

Anyway, tried windows update from the start menu, but no forward progress.
Given that my problem seems similar and the error/warning code I get is the
same - I thought I'd post on this tread...

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
