Windows update doesn't notify of updates

Using Windows Vista Business 32-bit, I have Windows Update set to "Check
for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". I
almost always log on as a standard user, rather than as an
administrator, using UAC to elevate to the admin account when necessary.
However, Windows Update does NOT pop up a message from the system tray
while logged on as a standard user when updates are available, like it
does if I log in as an administrator (which I very rarely do). Is there
a fix for this?

Thanks,
Mark.

I'm having exactly the same issue with Home Premium. Running as a standard
user appears to work fine for me in all other respects. Can anyone advise
how to resolve this?

Good to know it's not just me then ;o) Yep, Windows Update otherwise
works fine as a standard user if I start it from control panel, but I
forget to do that often, hence wanting the notifications. For what it's
worth, I think I had the same problem on Windows 2000 logged on as a
Power User vs Administrator, but never bothered to look into it.
Hopefully someone can suggest a solution....

Mark.

I contacted MS tech support which, it seems, is free for Windows Update
issues. I had a reply a couple of days ago where they thought I couldn't
install updates and tried to solve that problem which I don't have. I
thought I had been clear that it was just the notification icon which
wasn't showing up, and only when I was a standard user. I replied to
explain again, hopefully very clearly this time, but haven't yet
received anything else. I'll post again here if they come back with
anything useful....

Mark.

That's great! I've emailed the Windows Vista Security Blog team
(http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsvistasecurity) with the problem and asked if
this behavior is by design (I'll be very surprised if it is). I'm not
holding my breath for a response but if I get anything back I'll post it
here. I'm also looking for other people to contact too and post anything
else I get.

My fingers are crossed for some sort of response soon.

Today I posted a new thread in the Windows Vista Security newsgroup to see if
we can get any response there...
