windows update will download but will not install

Last night, I install Windows XP to do a repair. Then I had to get all the
updates for Windows. I got the downloads but Windows will not install them.
What would cause this? How can I get Windows to install updates.

Reboot

Now try to install your updates.

If no luck, try Dial-ª-fix

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mºde. (F-8)

Exit Safe Mode (Rebººt)

You didn't say, or at least it's not clear, whether you tried getting the
updates using Internet Explorer, by going here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can
be scanned.


Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and download the
same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar notificatiºn.


If going to the site is successful, keep going back until there are no more
critical updates to install.

I tried "Method one" and it worked! All 81 updates are now installed. Thanks

Is there a corresponding solution for Windows 2000?
I have the same problem on a freshly installed Win2000 SP4. Updates download
but do not install automatically. I can install them manually from the files
in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, but Microsoft Update simply reports
failed to install with no further information.
