Windows Update download window hangs

I am running Windows ME and when I try to update the download window appears but never starts. I tried the solution in troubleshooter which was...
Run: regsvr32 msscript.ocx, regsvr32 dispex.dll, regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and regsvr32 scrrun.dll
These are successful except regsvr32 msscript.ocx which gives this error:

Load library("mscript.ocx") failed.
Get lasterror returns 0x00000485

Please help.

I did find an article for the mscript.ocx, however if the DLL is dependant
on another file
that is busy when you try and re-register this may be the cause.

Since IE is now so integrated into the browser there is a specific DLL that
has not been correctly
registered in either Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer.

This is how we fix this.

Action Plan

1. open "wordpad"
2. copy this text (below) into the "wordpad"
3. save the "wordpad" file as "IEreg.bat" to your desktop and then "double
click" to launch

In this case it looks like a typo <s> but the usual answer is that
not all users have that module. For example, the DLL Help Database
does not have a match for that module with that OS. In general it seems
to be something only users of NT5 or developers might have. So even
if Pepi had shown signs of typing the module name correctly there should
still be no real concern about this warning code.


BTW if these three commands do not contain typos
would you mind explaining what they do?

I implemented Mark Brown's solution re error 0x00000485, ie Me critical
security update ( KB889293 and KB837009) hang using his suggested IEreg.bat.
But it will not run. Gives "Bad command or file name".

regsvr32 msscript.ocx was only re-registerof the 4 that would not run.
On checking file(open) types re .JS, only discrepancy found was absence of
"System" in both .JS and .JSE. It was added.

The error message seems self-evident.
What have you checked?

One possibility is that if you followed the suggestion to use WordPad
but did not use the doublequotes the example specified
and did not change the type of the file before saving IEreg.bat
it might actually have been saved as something like IEreg.bat.doc

Further if you don't display extensions the icon on the Desktop
(assuming that you also followed the suggestion to save the file
to Desktop) would just be labeled IEreg.bat (hiding the .doc extension).

Next I will guess that rather than doubleclicking on that icon
(which would relaunch WordPad) you opened a command
window and tried to enter IEreg.bat there, thus producing
the above error message. (Even if you did navigate to the
correct directory (or had a reference to it in your Path environmental
variable) there would be no IEreg.bat to execute as a batch file
anywhere because of my assumption about the extension
the file was saved with.)

BTW for OS which can do them (including now XPsp2)
a nearly equivalent repair to Mark's script would be
a standard IE Repair (KB194177).


If you need more help please make your problem description clearer
so we don't have to resort to so much inferential speculation.
