Windows Update downloads but fails to install...

Windows Update finds critical updates, downloads them, but fails to install
them. Update History shows no failures. I have to download/install the
updates manually.

I tried removing the 'Windows/system32/CatRoot2' folder, to no avail.

Does anyone know what's going on? Using Windows XP HE with SP2.

Same problem with one of mine since SP2 was installed. I wasted a lot
of time trying many fixes none of which worked so I updated it
manually ever since with no problems.

Fixed it last week with a full reformat/reinstall - not for this minor
update snag but because it was long overdue a major cleanout.

Just update it manually its far less trouble IMO

BTW whats XP HE?

No I did not, but here is how I found the solution. In the
'C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log' file I noticed the following error messages:

WARNING: WU client failed installing updates with error 0x80240020
WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240FFF; Call error code = 0x80240020

I did some googling and found that the registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify_Disabled

needs to be renamed to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

I did that and all my update problems went away.

Well now I get those annoying pop-ups about the firewall and anti-virus
("Windows Security Alerts") but at least I can update my computer (which I
hadn't been able to since last November). Thanks for your detailed help in
the windowsxp.help_and _support group.

You can tweak the Security Center to not monitor the firewall setting &/or the antivirus. If that's your wish.
However, just be sure you do have a firewall and an antivirus program.

Again, you are welcome.
