This is the second time I have tried to download an update. The first was a
critical security update for .Net. It downloaded but did not install.
Now I'm back to try again. This time am advised to download and install
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). So I downloaded it
and it did not install.
When I checked the installed list for failed downloads, they are not there,
so I cannot find a reason for the failure.
Any solutions?

When it fails to install -

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects.
Right-click on each item denoted as "Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool" and select "Remove".

Afterward, visit the following web site:

Dear TaurArian,
There WAS no Validation Tool in View Objects to delete.
I validated that my copy of winXP Home OEM is genuine by doing the test at
the link provided.
What's next?
Thanks for your help.

Try installing WGA engine manually - see below instructions on how to do
that. Note that the links I refer to may wrap to more than one line.

Before you do this, clean out your temporary internet files etc and perhaps
the datastore folder. Use the method outlined here
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en

Now download WGA by following the following steps:-

Courtesy of Microsoft:

<snip>
Install the WGA engine manually
==========================

1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
the
Desktop
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following three files:

GWFSPIDGen.dll
LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and
press Enter. Copy the GWFSPIDGen.dll and LegitCheckControl.dll files into
the opened
system32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the
quotations) and press Enter. We will see a popup message state this process
succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Copy
the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
and then
choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After we finish the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate the
Windows again.

Dear TaurArian,

I followed procedure 'til point where I download .cab file. I get screen

" We’re sorry, but there is no Microsoft.com Web page that matches your
entry. It is possible you typed the address incorrectly, or the page may no
longer exist. You may wish to try another entry or choose from the links
below, which we hope will help you find what you’re looking for."

- the links are of course no help.

And - "You might not have permission to view this directory or page using
the credentials you supplied."

Accessing download.microsoft site for genuinecheck.exe is not allowed either.

What gives? I bought this computer new one year ago with a genuine WinXP
OEM CD with WinXP Home preinstalled. I don't know how to write script, I'm an
oldist male of 55 years and of respectable British stock and honest.

Whats next?

You are posting from the web client - perhaps when the link broke up, you may have
missed a bit.
Try the shorted abbreviated link

http://tinyurl.com/8vsuh

Which is:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab
It must be the whole line, it will then come up with a download prompt.
It's not a website as such, it's a direct download of the LegitCheckControl.cab
It is working for me.
