I have no problems using Windows Update Version 6 via XP Pro SP2 and IE7 with
all of the latest fixes applied. However, I have two fixes (KB931784 and
KB929338) that just keep requiring a download and install, regardless of the
fact that they have been installed previously. I remove them via the
Add/Remove Programs function and reinstall them, but the same problem occurs.
I hide them so I don’t keep getting the “update notification” messages, but
this only hides the problem; it does not fix the issue. Any ideas?

What are the updates?
I have this problem with dotNet Framework 1.1 where the framework has been
installed ok but the service pack for it repeatedly fails to install. All
the more puzzling because this up=date was generated in 2004.
From the update log I can see that the update downloads OK but the
installation fails for no given reason.
There is an extremely complicated fix given in
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\1033\ repairRedist.htm
but it has not helped.
My experience is the |Microsoft update is heavily bloated and bug ridden. Do
not us auto update, but configure it to notify you when an update is
available and then inspect it to see what it does. \if after a couple of
weeks there is not the frequent outcry that the update is flawed and you do
need the update only the install it.

Are you installing via Automatic Updates or Windows Update website?

Hello,
I seem to have a nearly identical problem with security update KB931784. I
have followed the same procedures you indicate and the automatic update icon
keeps popping up to inform me that I have an update to install. I have
reported the problem to microsoft. This is the second problem with an
automatic security update that I have experienced within the past 7 days.
Sadly with the first, the fix was not issued automatically but I was directed
by a helpful technician to a subsequent update fix. I suggest reporting your
problem to Microsoft as I did.

Assuming you're on Windows XP SP2:

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-a9f1eae19b51

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB9231784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o!
</selfquote>

Bye,
Freudi

Thanks for a very useful post. I was able to install the fix for .Net
Framework 1.1 using your method.
Using the /o switch brought up only a list of options so I tried without.
The installer ran but stopped because it could not find a file I recognised
as belonging to .Net Framework 1.1 itself. So I reinstalled that and then
ran the fix as you indicated but without the /0 switch and the installation
completed.
Thanks again for your help.

I apologize for the tardiness of my reply, but I have been travelling and
working hard, but just before the next “super” or indeed “security” Tuesday,
I must say thank you to Ottmar Freudenberger for his advice.

So I used the hide updates feature of Windows Update to remove the constant
reminder, I tinkered with the registry to fool Windows into thinking the
fixes hadn’t been applied successfully, but the only thing that fixed the
problem was a simple 2 step process:

1) Download the individual fix from the Microsoft download centre, for
example:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-a9f1eae19b51

**** Save this file to your hard disk (E.g. C:\My Downloads) ****

2) Install the fix manually via the Run dialog with the Overwrite OEM (/o)
option, for example:
"C:\My Downloads\WindowsXP-KB9231784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

This does work and then next time you run Windows Update, even if the
updates are hidden, the recurring fixes will no longer require installing!

I hope this resolution also works for you all!
