HI, i don't seem to be able to install windows updates. possibly since
installing sp2.message says can't retrieve files, error 0x800A0005.when i
first installed it i couldn''t get on line,so i removed it then reinstalled
it ,now this. i also couldn't run norton updates. i have since uninstalled
this and installed a different anti virus software that is running and
updating fine.

Kindly note that this error code is one of the rare ones, imho.
Begin by using WINVER to see what it shows.
Run WINVER to get a full description of your Windows version.
Start menu > select RUN > then type
WINVER <enter-key>

Write down the full version number-description, and post that back. (the whole line that begins Version 5.1 .......)

Do the same with Internet Explorer version number-string, and report that.
IE browser, select Help > About. Write down the whole line with Version.

Next, get (for the last 1 or 2 sessions at Windows Update) the entries from the update log, and copy & paste into reply.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder. (yours may be in folder \WINNT)

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

Hi, Gary;

In addition to the good advice that Maurice posted, you may want to try the
following:

First, download and install the latest VB scripting engine from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Second, clear your IE browser cache by closing IE, going to Control Panel,
open Internet Options, and from the General tab selecting to Delete Files;
be sure to select the Offline Content option when presented. When that is
complete, click the button to clear your History while still on that General
tab.

Close all open apps, and do a full shut down of the system (not a Restart).
Once the system is powered off, wait 30 seconds and power back on.

Then open IE and browse to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com Be sure
to accept any ActiveX controls you get prompted to install; you may dismiss
any of the updates offered EXCEPT you must (!!!) install the BITS 2.0 update
from Windows Update.

Would you discribe your system for us? For example, is this a standalone
computer or on a LAN? If on a network, do you have any drives mapped?
Even if a standalone computer, are there multiple drives/partitions, and if
so what is the drive with the most free space and does XP have full Admin
rights to that drive/partition?
