Windows Update error 0x800C0008 in Win 98

Hello!

I just ran across my third Windows 98 workstation in two weeks that will not
get any updates from Windows Update and says there is an error in the time
settings (see error below).

********************************
Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in
your computer's time setting.

To check your date and time setting:

On the taskbar, double-click the time.
Verify that the date and time is correct.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows
Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0008)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident;
you may or may not receive a response.
********************************

I looked into the WU troubleshooter and it suggested SSL problems. On one
workstation, it would not access any SSL sites at all and it showed 0-bit
cipher strength for IE6. Per this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;261328 and Method 2
for Win98, I renamed three files and reinstalled IE6. That fixed it. I tried
it on the two other stations, even though they would both access other SSL
sites without any problem and had 128-bit cipher strength, and neither one
was fixed.

I have tried deleting history, cache, cookies, temp files, verified correct
time, date, and language settings, "check for server certificate revocation"
is unchecked, etc. Every time I try the suggested
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp page, all I get is

- <catalog>
<provider />
</catalog>

and no other information on the page.

Any idea of the root cause of this problem?

Thanks for helping!

Gregg Hill

Jupiter,

I tried several of those suggestions to no avail. I am trying to set a time
to do the rest. I'll let you know how it turns out.

By the way, what output should I expect on a properly working computer when
I go to the https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp page? All
I get is

- <catalog>
<provider />
</catalog>

and nothing else on the page. That is from several XP Pro stations.

Well,

I finally got the chance to go back to this client and try to fix the
error...only it was no longer there. Neither I nor the client did anything
to the workstation, but Windows Update works just fine now. VERY strange!
