Hi,

I have a Windows xp machine running 24x7 for file sharing purpose. Usually,
when there is update, I let Windows download automatically and notify when it
finishes. Later, I will install the update manually.
Recently, I notice that Windows update defender cannot update its database,
I tried to run windows update manually but it failed. I also empty Temporary
Internet Files, Cookies ... as suggested in Error page but no help. Checking
EventLog I found that there are a lot of Error message ralated to ESSENT
(event id 623). It says that:

"wuaueng.dll (2160) SUS20ClientDataStore: The version store for this
instance (0) has reached its maximum size of 8Mb. It is likely that a
long-running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and
causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected until the
long-running transaction has been completely committed or rolled back.
Possible long-running transaction:
SessionId: 0x00D30320
Session-context: 0x00000000
Session-context ThreadId: 0x00000874"

I doubt that it caused Windows Update problem. I tried finding solution on
the Internet but it only related to Exchange server. So I don't know how to
fix it.

Could anybody help me?

Thanks in advance.

Try this:

1. Stop the service "Automatic Updates"
2. Rename the folder "DataStore" at:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
to something else.
3. Restart the service "Automatic Updates"

You will lose your Update History when you do this. The DataStore will be
rebuilt the next time Windows Update runs.

You might also benefit from installing the version 3 of the UpdateClient, by
downloading to hard disk from:

<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

If this produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in (at a comand prompt window):

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce
