Pete,

I've had the same problem, which I've now got past. Today I uninstalled
Spybot 1.2, downloaded Spybot 1.3 and ran check-for-problems and immunize
cycles. Then I went onto the Microsoft site to do a custom download of SP2.
(yes, I've been bad about not updating but wanted the release to settle out).
I then got the error message. So I used Spybot to recover all the bits that
I'd cleaned up. Still no luck, so then I rebooted. That seemed to take care
of the problem.

I am not sure that Spybot is the source of my problems. I reran the
check-for-problems step and got two fairly different pieces of adware.
Cleaning them up did not cause any problems in the Microsoft site. I had a
bad uninstall of Spybot 1.2, as I forgot to do it in admin mode and it did a
partial removal, which I finished manually. I did a reboot aftermy install of
Spybot 1.3 and before checking for Microsoft updates.

Any of this sound familiar? Curious to hear how you're doing.

Hi

Most likely because the "Automatic Updates" service is not set to
Automatic or BITS is not set to Manual or Event Log is not set to
Automatic.

Please follow the steps below exactly:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates

3. In the Startup type list, if not already set to Automatic,
click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service

6. In the Startup type list, if not already set to Manual,
click Manual, and then click Apply. Regardless of the Startup type
it had originally, see if you can stop and start the service
without any problem.

7. Then find the Event Log service and repeat step 3. and 4. for it.
