Windows Update Error Message Hell

When checking for updates, I'm getting error message 0x8024402F. The logs
(below) show error number 80072efe preceding it.

I've searched the newsgroup and found numerous references to each. I've
followed lots of recommendations... reinstalling windows update, removing my
SoftwareUpdates folder, re-registering my related DLLs, checking the proxycfg
settings, etc. I've even gone so far as to re-install XP and SP2! All to
no avail.

I have a direct connection (no proxy), yet the log says things like
"SendRequestUsingProxy failed for <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com".

I have a second computer using the same connection, and update works just
fine on it - so it isn't an issue with my DSL modem and/or linksys router.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Perhaps your computer thinks there's a proxy.

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status Direct access (no proxy server).
To set direct access: proxycfg -d

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses: proxycfg
Click Start, select run and type: cmd
then type: proxycfg

This is what I did and it worked for me.

1. Make sure you have Windows Installer version 3.1
2. Make sure the Automatic Updates service is started... if it is, restart
the service
3. Make sure the Background Intelligence Transfer Service is started and set
to Auto
3. Make sure the Windows Installer Service is started and set to Automatic

This drove me nuts for a day at work until I finally got it to work

If all else fails, you might try shavlik.com. Download their software.
It will scan your computer and tell you what updates are needed. Then you
can download all of them and install them. It's a reputable company. If
you have <10 computers, the software is free. The updates are the same
updates that MS provides. In fact, Shavlik has designed software for MS.
