Hi there, could you please check the windows update log for more clues -
especially error codes etc which may assist.

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error
code(s) or explanation as to why the page cannot be displayed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

thanks for the reply, i did as you suggested and found this error code
hr=8024000C so i googled it and found a post suggesting to dl + install the
windows update agent so i searched for this and dl'ed, it wouldnt install the
first time so i dl'ed the 64bit version and that installed fine. i then tried
windows update again and im now getting a message saying administrators only?
but i am running as the administrator because i never set up a password when
i reformatted.
