Hi,

I wondered if anyone had any ideas what todo about the following:-

Trying to update a friends pc who had to rolback to his setup disk that came
with his pc. This set him back to SP1 and had to reload his adsl modem
drivers etc. When he got back setup on the internet he tried to download the
windows update patches.

When running KB898461 gets the follwing error saying the update has been
cancelled :- (Any ideas to try???)

If you rolled back to Setup Disk (SP1), I would assume that anything
updated/installed since then would become null and void.

SOOOOOO ... I'm assuming that the C:\Windows\$hf_mig$ folder (containing
references to all past patches/updates) does not reflect your new system.

I would try backing up the $hf_mig$ folder, remove everything under it and
try again.

Maybe others can verify what I have stated.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked in the directory you suggested but it had nothing in it. I looked
around on the internet and found a few other things to try which included the
following :-

1. Renamed spupdsvc.exe and tried installing again
2. Tried stopping the windows update service, renamed the software
distribution dir and restarted but still update not worked.
3. Removed windows installer 3.1 and re-installed from MS site.
4. The last thing i tried was to install the KB manually after downloading
from MS site. but got the following error :-

Setup Cannot the file Update_SP2QFE.inf

any ideas?

Ian W,
I too rolled back WINXP to SP1 and have the same troubles. No patches will
install.
4 patches out of over 40 attempted installed manually, KB842773, KB888162,
KB888302 & KB891781.
log for KB385732 and other patches contained lines:
AnalyzeComponents: Hotpatch analysis disabled; skipping.
***

AnalyzeComponents: Hotpatching is disabled.
I signed on to get replies to your post.
