Greetings,
I've been trying to update windows (XP Professional) on my new system for
the past 5 days without any success. I've tried every trick and support
option available online including the "Guided Help" feature, but nothing
seems to work. I've contacted MS support and I'm still waiting for an answer.

Essentially, I can't use Windows update---> I get the "Thank you for you
interest..." message when trying to access it from Help and support, and
whenever I try the web-based update I get error (0x80072F76)!!!

I'm running Norton Internet security 2006, but even disabling it did not
help!!!!

I recall I had the same problem with the previous system, but it was
resolved (can't remember how) by deleting certain files from the windows
directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Al

Are you using a browser other than IE?
Are you using a restricted user account?
Have you masked/changed your browsers user agent string?

There are some answers here..
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

Personally, I think NIS knows something about it.

Thanks for your reply Peter,

1) No other browser.
2) I'm using an administrator account
3) Not that I'm aware of.

I've checked article kbid 836941 and tried all the suggested tips, but none
worked! Turned NIS off, and tried...still nothing!

Any other helpful hints please?

Cheers,

From IE > Tools > Windows Update, do you still get "Thank you for your
interest in obtaining updates from our site" ?

What does the next line say ?

You can check your user-agent string here..
http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

Post it back here if it doesn't look 100% normal.
