Windows Update errors Frustration

I've been trying to solve the Update freeze, Error problems and have worked
with two Microsoft people and many solutions some I have used from here and
the knowledge base, without success.

I guess with the amount of time it is taking, I almost feel I am being a
tester for the problem and I don't have the time or patience for much more of
this.

Are there other people out there having similar experiences? there does not
seem to be a single fix but multiples and if you don't succeed try again.
I've also noticed some of the fixes are slightly modifed depending on the
source.

Has anyone tried doing a reinstall with the XP2 Cd to get the sytesm back to
a
base state.

Is there going to be a patch or do I have to spend another xhours testing
solutions that do not work.

Some options I have tried that didn't work

Suggestion 1

This issue occurs if the Storage location of the Downloads from the Windows
Update site gets corrupted. We need to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
and access the windows update site so that a new folder can be created. For
renaming the SoftwareDistribution, the Automatic Update service needs to be
stopped. We will enable the service once the renaming is completed.

2. Now Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (XP wouldn't let me do it
shared files with server off command in place)
Delete files in folder and wait for rebuild (did not work either)

Suggestion 2

This issue occurs if some files are not properly registered in the system. I
have listed some steps that will assist you with resolving the error message.

01. Click Start and select Run and type "regsvr32 wuapi.dll" ( without the
quotation marks and this applies to all the files)
02. Click OK to register it. 10 steps

Suggestion 1A

Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the
proxy cache.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools, select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab.
4. Click on the LAN Settings.
5. Click on the Advanced button.
6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

Next, clear your proxy cache.

1. Click on Start, and then click /Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type proxycfg -d at the command prompt, and press Enter.
4. Type net stop wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try the site again.

If the issue persists, kindly try the next suggestion.

Suggestion 2A

1. On the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
2. Click on the Connections tab.
3. Uncheck "Use of Proxy server for your LAN.

7. Try to get your Windows Updates again

** If this does not resolve your issue close all windows and go back to your
desktop before proceeding to the next step.

Hi,

Same for me for the updates, Sometime freeze, sometime not, works only first
time when PC is starting then If I try a second time
it freeze. And try all solution here and in the MK Db
I have the same feeling than you, testing for Microsoft.

So I stop that, Now when I want to update I'm using the V4 instead of V5
and I have no problem..
Strange no ? Why do we have to change something to make the Windows update
V5 running and take the risk to make something else
does not work.
Good Luck

I tried many of the fixes, too. I was able to load SP2 (is that good or
bad?) but all my other windows updates get stuck at initializing. At the
risk of displaying my ignorance to the world, how do you use V4 instead of
V5? This is outside my usual ivory tower....

I think the only way an XPsp2 user can avoid WUv5 and use WUv4
instead (sort of) is as an Administrator by using the Windows Update
Catalog. (Click on <Administrator Options> and then you will see a link
to that service.)

BTW if you need help with your problems you will have to give much
clearer and more precise descriptions of your problem symptoms.
Otherwise try using the Troubleshooter (linked to via the <Help and Support>
menu option.)

Good luck

"RuthMerm",

The best thing to do is to try and install just one update, and when it
fails, send us the relevant error from the log. Here is how to do that:

On Windows XP:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log
4. Click OK
5. Next, when the log has opened, scroll all the way to the bottom.
6. Ensure this is the case by clicking anywhere inside the log and typing
the <CTRL> and <End> keys.
7. Now that you are at the bottom of the log, type <CTRL> then the <F> key
for Find.
8. When the Find window opens, in Direction click the "Up" radio button.
9. Still in the Find window, in the Find what: field, type in 0x and then
click the Find Next button.
10. You will find the very latest error, usually in a format such as
0x800732EF or 0xFFFFFB40.
11. Copy the whole line this code is on, and perhaps a few others around it,
to let us understand the context.
12. Reply to this thread in this newsgroup, and paste the text you copied
from the log.
13. Also tell us what update you were installing.

Let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi Pat,
I agree but I have the problem since a long time, try many solutions
describe here and everywhere else
without any success.
I've posted here the problem without any chance and just posted again the
problem here without any answer until now.
The name of the post is "WU 5 works only once per Boot and then error
0x80072EE2" posted today.

I know that everybody is doing their Best to help but you can understand
that sometime spending all the time and waste the time to everybody to debug
a problem that does not exist with a previous version for doing the same
thing can be very Frustrating.

That's why a good workaround is sometime better.
But I'm still confident, one day WU5 will work fine :-)

Thank you to everybody that give their time fot that.

Thanks Karl, Pat, and Robert. I did not provide detail in my first message
because it had all been said by others in these discussions, including the
error numbers. I really just wanted to know what I asked - how to use
Windows Update V4 with SP2.

I need to put this down for a while because of a client project that landed
on my desk yesterday. I'll get back to my machine, and to your answers, when
my desk is clean again.

I spent some time with my IT director yesterday (he was not available when I
tried to do this on my own) and we got everything installed. This rose to
the top of my desk again because I tried to install Visio from a CD - nothing
to do with Windows Update except that, lo and behold, it got stuck at
initializing. Here's what we did:

1) I switched profiles. This may not be viable for everyone, but my IT
director saw that I was not logging into our domain, so it made sense for me.
We're not sure what happened to my old profile, but the new one works
better.

2) We turned off System Restore (mentioned in other email messages in this
group) My IT director thought System Restore might be having trouble finding
the maximum amount of space. However, we tried but could not turn it back on
after decreasing the amount of disk space to use, so we left it off.

3) I installed Visio and then used Windows Update to install critical and
hardware updates successfully.

4) Overnight I defragmented my disk. In the morning I was able to turn
System Restore back on with a 586 MB disk space allotment.

5) Since I had already installed the critical updates, I used Windows Update
to install Media Player 10. It worked.

Hints for non-IT people like me:
To get to System Restore settings: Control Panel>System>System Restore
To defragment at disk: My Computer>Right click on the
disk>Properties>Tools>Defragmentation
