Windows Update Express doesn't show needed updates

I have tried to download updates through the icon on window that takes you to
the automatic updates to select from Express or Custom but when I select
either I get an error.
When I view my update history it just shows updates from way in the past

Windows version?

Assuming WinXP or Vista, if you're running a third-party firewall,
temporarily disable it AND enable the Windows Firewall, then try Windows
Update again.
