Windows Update Failed Installation

Hi,
I have recently re formated my HD and reinstalled XP Pro. When I went to
windows update there were 4 that would not install. As I continued to retry
installing them 1 eventually for no reason installed, however these 3 will
not. KB889293
KB835732
KB828741
I was able to install KB35732 and Windows Update would just continually look
for updates and freeze if I clicked out of it, so I uninstalled it and it
will not reinstall. These updates are preventing me the option of
downloading SP2 from Windows Update. I've tried manually one at a time and
using Automatic update and it still fails everytime. I even tried downloading
the individual updates and installing them seperatly from Windows Update to
no avail. I've never had a problem installing updates before, and am stumped
on this one.

Are you assuming that or is there something else you're not telling us?

Look at the related security bulletins for KB835732 and KB828741
(for example). Both explicitly state:

The update for these issues will be included in Windows XP Service Pack 2.
</quote>

That implies that XPsp2 supersedes those patches anyway.

One possibility is that you have already installed the update
Rollup 889669 which would mean that you now have modules
which supersede the ones in KB889293. So then that would not
be required either. Use the file manifest in MS04-040 to check
if that is the case or use MBSA to give you its impression of
what patches you are missing.
