Windows Update Fails to Download

Sorry must have hit the wrong key somewhere. When I try to download the
latest Critical Updates for Internet Explorer I get the message WINDOWS
UPDATE IS DOWNLOADING THE UPDATES........PLEASE WAIT but nothing happens and
the download progress bar remains blank.

Also, in the list of updates is 823559 which keeps re-appearing daily
despite my having already unwittingly downloaded and installed ithe same
update successfully about six times.

What should I do? Would re-installing Windows Updater help?

I have exactly the same problem as Yedi!!
Mine PC is always set to auto updates and I thought every thing was fine
until I tried a manual update and found that the update was failing without
appearing to download a byte. It sits trying for each and every patch and
then gives ap with a download failed but NO error message number.
I have checked my update history and it claims that my last successful
update was 11 August 2004! It was at this time that the new Update Loader was
installed (if I'm not mistaken) and since then my PC has never been able to
update.
I, like Yedi, would love to have an answer to this problem.
If the Updater is "broken" can I manually download it again without using
Update to correct the problem?

I have the same problem, Windows Update quit working when I installed XP SP2.
Can use the list of updates (eg KB888302) from Windows Update, write them
down and go to microsoft download center and manually download each update
manually. Painful, but it works until this is fixed. Two identical
machines, and one works fine and this is the other one. Original SP2 attempt
failed, ordered the disks and have already tried uninstalling XP SP2,
clearing Internet Explorer files, and reinstalling XP SP2. No avail. Also
tried downloading newer Java VM, no change. Interesting to see I'm not
alone, there isn't anything about this yet anywhere else.

I have had the same problem with XP on one machine, but not on another. I
have tried many times to download with long waits that result in failure!

Have you checked the windows update log for an error code or clues?

C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (Win XP & Win98/Me)
C:\WINNT\Windows Update.log (Windows 2000)

Hi

Note that for WinXP that is using the "new" Windows Update (v5), the
log file is named windowsupdate.log (no space).

To open the log, from Start/Run run this exact command:

notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

The solution posted here
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en
worked for me. If it works for you, I suggest you add it to your favorites
because my experience has shown that this problem will recur! It will delete
your update history (not critical), but it gets the updates to download.
