Windows Update Fails due to historical SUS settings

I have a number of Windows 2000 Pro machines that used to have updates
deployed via SUS. The SUS Server was on another site connected via a WAN. The
WAN link has now been severed and there is no connection to the SUS Server.

Attempting to gather updates from MS Windows Updates fails and does not get
past the scrolling progress bar.

How can I reset this and remove wuauclt.exe settings so that I can enable
the clients to automatically receive updates from Microsoft.

Thanks.
