First off my windows is genuine and it gets certified as such whenever i go
to microsoft download. Hower this is the problem i face. The genuine
advantage tool was downloaded a long time ago and it appears in my add-on
section, however whenever i try to do a windows update This message comes up:
Details
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that
your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows
installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product
Activation status.

Total: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)

Download and install now.

The installation always fails. It says that it was unable to be successfully
installed.

I got a tip from another microsoft thread to try this WGA diagnostic tool
(1.5.0526.1)..

The results are posted below. i don't know if this will halp anyone to help
me but i really hope someone can fix this.

NOTE: i removed the profect key and product id from this messagefor
security...
Once again the genuine advantage tool already seems to be installed as it is
in my add-ons so i dont know why windows update is asking me to install it
again...

The only thing i have done recently that i can think of is try out one care
live and explorer 7 but i removed them ....

Hoping you can help me solve this problem sooner rather than later

A potential fix has been previously in this newsgroup. Here it is
again:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that groupname Administrators allowed Full Control
permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

If that does not fix your problem, please post the contents of your file

C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log

in a follow-up in this thread

Hi Robin
I tried the solution you provided, but there is no problem in my registry.
my admin account has full rights upon the LegitCheckControl.Legitcheck and
LegitCheck.1. Still doesn't want to install. But i noticed something
interresting:
I ran the update.exe application (it was downloaded in the
C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\... folder). In the window in a label i saw
the progress of the install (filenames, copied, where, etc). But at a certain
moment the application wanted to write into the registry, an error message
appeared "Access is denied". I realise the problem is in the registry, but
where?
Thanks

It appears that there might be pre-existing registry permissions problems
elsewhere than the two registry keys already identified. To establish which
keys are affected would require more debugging skills than the average
Windows end-user can be expected to have. If you are interested in taking
this further, e-mail me privately.

I found that the problem disapeared when I changed my default internet
browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer (I assumed that if I used
Internet Explorer to run the update site, it would be OK, but it
appears that the validation diagnostic detects which is your default
browser, too).
