Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

I have been getting an error from Windows Update: 80072EFE.
I found no help anywhere on this error. Windows update fails to work
although all other websites are available, and the computer works normally.
Update has been working perfectly until a week or two ago. There have been no
new software installs and no system hardware or software changes.

Oh, this page says "Windows Vista community" so I thought this was for Vista.
I am using Vista Business edition, and the vista firewall that came with it.
But I have disabled the firewall, and entered the Microsoft sites that some
similar errors suggested into the trusted sites. I checked the "hosts" file
and there are no entries for windows update or any Microsoft sites. I am not
using a proxy. I have a direct connection through the college network.

Hi Keith,

This normally means that something is terminating your connection to
WindowsUpdate.

Can you post the windowsupdate.log file here?

Try to open wsus admin page and I get the following error "Service
Unavailable".

Go to IIS Manager and try to browse the page and I get the same error.

Same error here. Twice trying to download SP2. The first time it got through
the "Preparing to Download" step and had been in "Downloading" for awhile.
The second time, there was no "Preparing to Download" step. Earlier had no
problem downloading small updates.

O/S is Windows XP V5.1 SP1. No firewall installed yet, unless Windows or AOL
(9.0) has one running that I don't know about. (Will be Grisoft when I'm
fully installed.)

The only available connection out here is phone modem, and I'm getting max
connection of around 24K (40K on a good day, but not for several days now).
Is there a way to get SP2 on CD? I'm not sure I can hold on to a connection
for the 8 hours I'm told it takes for SP2 download.

THe WindowsUpdate.log is located in the WINDOWS directory [folder],
Keith. You can just enter windowsupdate.log in the Search window to
locate it.

Yes, I have posted the file entries for today after a reboot and another
attempt to connect to Winows Update. Just for reference, I noticed the the
error has changed. This often happens. Then it will change again. I have
already performed all the steps in the KB article for error: 0x80072EE2.
Nothing helped. And also, you will notice my location is China. I am a Math
professor teaching here for 6 months. I have been able to access Windows
update here in China on previous trips, and just 2 weeks ago, with no
problem, so I don't think my location is the cause.
