windows update fails to ever download updates

starting some time in november 23ish my machine stopped getting automatic
updates. I have a win 7 OS. I've gone through a number of trouble shooting
tips I've seen around but none will unblock me. when I go to windows update,
it says downloadin 1 of 7 (0KB total, 0% complete). I've tried messing
around and only downloading one (each individually) and nothing works.

Could you supply some information on what your firewall is, anti-virus,
other R-TP programs ?.

subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Win 7: It was a brand new computer post RTM so no upgrade.

McAfee was installed as a trial version, I thought maybe that was it so I
uninstalled it out of frustration, but it still repros.

No Proxy

Firewall was managed by the McAfee install, but now defaults to Windows.

Hi Marty,


McAfee applications are notorious for not uninstalling "cleanly."

1. Download the McAfee Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507>

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Right-click on the file you saved in #1 above and select Run as
Administrator to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run
completes, then reboot & test.
