Windows Update fails to execute (fault code 0x80240030)

I have been unable to do Windows update for two days now (fault code
0x80240030). I am running v6 of Microsoft/Windows Update. I followed
Microsoft instructions for solution 2 of this problem to no effect. As I am
not a corporate user, solution 1 doesn't appear to apply. Is v6 of Update
working for other users and does anyone know of other solutions to this
problem?

Try disabling proxy servers in internet options first.

open IE. Go to tools-> internet options. Click the connections tab, and then
click LAN settings. Uncheck the option to use a proxy server, and try again.

If that does not work, go to start-> run-> and type services.msc

Look for the Background Intelligent Transfer service, and try to set it to
automatic. Restart, and go back to make sure the service is started. If it
does not start automatically, follow KB 915170 to repair the BITS service.

Hi

Can you go to IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN
settings and tell me:

1) What is in the Proxy server address box?
2) Click on Advanced and what is in the Exceptions box?

Thanks,

I have had the same trouble, followed the self-help instructions and
everything else quoted as solving error 80240030 (including turning off the
proxy server) but with very limited success. If I click on the update
notification so as to download the latest updates (without going into
Tools/Windows Update) then sometimes the update downloads quite happily -
though slowly. If I use Tools/Windows Update then I get the usual error
message and may or may not get the error message. Once I managed to get
through without getting the error message and that was after turning off
McAfee AV and OnSpeed download accelerator. But I tried that again and that
didn't work either.

I recently upgraded to the Beta version of I.E. 7 and didn't have this
trouble at all when running I.E. 6. Perhaps I should try Firefox!

Hi

1. There is nothing in the Proxy server address box. Both check boxes in
the Proxy server section are checked (empty address and port fields greyed
out).

2. The following is in the Exceptions box:
;127.0.0.1:5405;*update.microsoft.com;*windowsupda te.com;download.microsoft.com;codecs.microsoft.com ;activex.microsoft.com;liveupdate.symantecliveupda te.com;liveupdate.symantec.com;download.mcafee.com ;*.phobos.apple.com;update.adobe.com;*.networkasso ciates.com;*.nai.com;service1.symantec.com;*.f863. mail.yahoo.com;click2service.tele2.se;*.click2serv ice.tele2.se;*.apple.com.

I followed Andrew's instructions, but the problem persists.

What special web-interception software do you have running on this PC? You
appear to have something accepting web requests running on TCP port 5405.
And this exceptions list is probably not enough to enable Windows Update to
work. Who made this exceptions list and why?

Yes, the problem is that Windows Update is having trouble with the proxy
settings on this machine, very likely the exceptions list.
Can you send WindowsUpdate.log (one word) from the Windows folder? That will
help to further identify the issue.

Thanks,

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2006 for protection. To the best of my
knowledge, I've not created/accepted additional rules since the last Windows
Update/attempted Update (prior to last Wednesday).

A bit more detail - last Wednesday, Windows Update tried to run
automatically, but appeared to 'fall-over' at 40% load as the 'shield'
disappeared from the tray (previous automatic update ran OK). I then tried a
manual update which identified the problem (never had a problem running
Windows Update before).

I have no idea as to what created the exceptions list.

WindowsUpdate.log does not appear to have been added to since 2004. Oscar,
if you still want to see it, please let me know (the content won't fit into a
posting).

Are there any Default proxy settings that will allow Windows Update to work
without causing a knock on effect on normal Internet access?

That's not the question I asked. I asked what web-interception software you
have running on this PC that is listening on port 5405. Please inspect your
PC and determine what is listening on port 5405.

Well then you should be very concerned. Maybe you have a malware infection.

> WindowsUpdate.log does not appear to have been added to since 2004.

Maybe you are looking at the wrong file. Oscar wanted

C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

not

C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update.log

which is likely not to have been updated since 2004.

Why do you have proxy definitions on your PC at all? Are they needed for
any purpose?

Thanks for pointing out my mistake regarding WindowsUpdate.log.

Additional info:
I checked my Windows Update Recent History and apparently, although the
Windows Update on the 28th June appeared to fail, the log states that
KB913670 was successfully installed. Since then (a matter of seconds later)
when I attempted a manual Windows Update, it has not worked since.

As KB913670 refers to time servers, is it possible that this update is
causing the problem and trying to set proxy servers on my PC?
