Windows update fails IE7 closes

When I go to Windows Update I get Internet Explorer 7 has encountered a
problem and needs to close.
My copy of Windows XP Pro is genuine and activated as with any programs I
have
on pc.

I am having the same issues. In fact, after running a couple virus scans,
and a kapersky (sp) scan and several malware/spyware scans and still nothing
found. I gave up and used my system's recovery disks to reinstall Win XP Pro
from scratch. I spent 4 hours running windows updates and getting everything
up to date. After I installed Windows Live One Care I decided to try out
Windows Update one more time, and guess what. I GOT THE SAME DARN issue.

I feel like I wasted WAY too much time on this.

I posted a help question yesterday on this and I'm glad you did today too.

This seems to be happening so frequently that there should be a link added
to the FAQ -- If Windows Update fails, do this first.
