Windows Update fails - not the usual problem!

It is probably related to memory failure as I lost 256mb recently. First of
all I thought I had caught a bad dose of "SpyWare" and a couple of viruses,
but after researching my problem I found it to be a hardware related and
proved this using "memtest".

Now when I try windows update it skips immediately to "Registering 100%..."
and after about one minute fails with [Error number: 0x8007041D]. I do not
have NOD32 running, nor is any Norton software installed.

My question is how to I force Windows update to download the components
necessary to successfully complete the windows update procedure?

Just incase I have missed something simple I have posted "windowsupdate.log"
below

This has been seen by several posters. wups.dll is missing for some
reason. It gets copied but not installed.

Is the service not stopping? There might be a clue about that in
the Event log (e.g. using Run... eventvwr)

From the versions of the modules which were logged I think you could
replace them by downloading and installing WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe
Search for posts which refer to that download and notice Torgeir's
additional tip about the /wuforce option.

Disclaimer: I haven't found any clear documentation about this download
but I think that I may have accidentally installed it myself when I installed
MBSA2.0. At least, the versions of the modules which I now have
match the versions of the modules which it would install (as seen
by using the /? switch and doing a filever on the temporary directory
it expands itself into.) In fact doing the latter would probably be one way
of getting a copy of wups.dll to install manually yourself, if you'd rather
try that.

In any case, here is a Message-ID for one of Torgeir's posts which
was a reply in an incident with very similar symptoms. (I'm offline at the
moment otherwise I would give you the web interface link.)

I wonder why there were *two* checks for this?
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps there was an account change
done. I think we would probably need to install with /verbose logging
active to get more clues about this. However, FileMon, filtering on
(say) wups.dll, would at least show you if there was an account change
involved.

More inexplicable details. If "registry operations" completed Ok earlier
why couldn't wups.dll be re-registered? Again, /verbose logging might
clarify or, in this case, RegMon might yield more clues.

If the service was stopped why does this copy have to be delayed?
In any case I suspect that this is why there's a loop: the module never
gets installed so you are going to be continually having WU trying to do
a self-update.

Yes, MBSA 2.0 will run WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe if it finds that
the Windows Update components are not up to date.

No kidding. In fact, your "View this thread" link is useless to me
because my DNS has no clue about your server.
It does have forums.yourdomain.com as 216.34.94.184
but that site just leads to an advertising page.
It also shows yourdomain.com.au as 216.7.162.127
but that redirects to www.instra.com

The full thread this is being appended to is so old
and apparently unmarked that it has been aged
even from the Microsoft web interface for newsgroups.

Google Groups still has it here:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...eff732c3a7b1e4

My guess though is that this "Me too!" poster is just reusing the Subject
and the old details would just confuse whatever the new issue is.
I strongly suggest starting a new thread with a more explicit Subject.
