Windows update fails, then customer support crashes

I've recently formatted my harddisk and reinstaled Windows 2000 Pro. I
acceded to Windows Update site and everything went fine. The site suggested
me to update to the latest version of Windows Update software and, to do
that, I was required to install a Service Pack (I cannot remember which of
them). I was able to download and install SP4 from the old Update site
(somewhere in the URL appeared 'v4', I guess this identifies the site's
version). After that, my Windows Update software was updated (now there is a
'v6' in the URL) and the problems began: I first tried to visit Microsoft
Update site, but when checking for updates it gave me an error message (I
don't remember the error number). Then I tried to go to the Windows Update
site, hoping at least to get some drivers I need and had already installed
before the format, so I knew they where available here. More of the same: the
site started to check for updates for a LONG while, then crashed with an
error page, very similar to the one I got from Microsoft Update. This time, I
noted the error number, which is 0x8DDD0009. I've searched on all the links
provided there for this error code, but there were no results. Finally, I
followed a link to get support from a Microsoft Technician; I was asked to
choose a country (I'm in Spain), then Explorer gave me a DNS error.
If it is of any help, I'll say that Automatic Updates is still working fine.
But, since the drivers I need are marked as 'Optional Hardware updates', I
cannot get them via Automatic Updates.
So, is there a solution to this problem? As a last possibility, could I get
back to the previous version of Windows Update, which worked fine, so I can
at least got the updates?

Thanks in advance,
Herenvardö, Happy Hippie Heviatta (a.k.a. H4)

That could solve once the problem with that single driver, but I'm still
unable to access the different optional updates for my system. I used to
install every update available, to get the most from my system; but to do
that I need the Update site. At the end, isn't it supposed to work? Why it
doesn't?
In fact, the driver thing was only the most urgent, and I've solved it
getting the drivers from the hardware's manufacturer's site. But I'd still
like to be able to access the Windows Update site
