windows update fails to update to new version with error code 8007

I am having problems with windows update it failed to find any updates with
error80073712. The stand alone installer fails with the same code and i have
windows sp1installed.

when i try to use windows update it says it should install new windows
update software and i press the install now button at which stage it fails
then i try to do the above and that fails. I have no v storedirty file or
pending file that i can find. Vista is such a pain in windows update when it
gives you the error above and there is no firm resolution to this as yet

I ran checksur and nothing and vista sp1 is installed. I also did a repair
install of vista four days ago.I guess that's what caused it. Will try one
more time but not sure if i really need the updates. Windows update is a
bigger pain than viruses

I guess there is no solution to the inherent bugginess of vista which
corrupts itself frequently. Not sure i am going to stay using microsoft
products. I tried email support for update and they wanted to charge lol for
a solution which as far as I know is to reinstall entirely.
