Windows Update fails for XP SP2

My last automatic update disappeared (the shield icon in the tray
disappeared) when I clicked on it. The installation log shows that the last
several updates were cancelled
as a result. I have since tried to manually use Windows Update to try and
install the missing updates but when I press the critical update search
button the search begins but never finishes. I thought perhaps the Microsoft
Update Server was very busy and let it run for about 30 minutes but with no
success.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

If the OS is Win XP/2K, all of updates can be obtained from the links in
their Security bulletins :

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

Download and save them, do not run them from the download links. Then
close IE and install them. If the installed antivirus program has a
script blocking component, temp disable it prior to installing.
Reenable it after any required rebooting of the system when the updates
install.
