Hi,

I am having a problem with windows update. I recently had to reinstall
(repair) my windows XP home edition. I tried to do a windows update and
when I do I get stuck at the "searching for the newest windows update
software". No error message, just nothing but that. Unfortunately, it
doesn't stop at that...I cannot even enter information in the microsoft
support website and send it to get support. I really can't do much of
anything on the windows website. I have disabled my firewall and my
anti-virus, and still nothing. I have scanned my computer for viruses with
2 different anti-virus softwares and it is supposed to be clean. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

Since you disabled the firewall and the anti-virus you
probably have a bunch of Trojans, worms and such.
You might be well advised to collect your back-ups, and then
do a format and clean install.

I turned the firewall and anti-virus off only to try to update to check if
they were the problem. I immediately turned them back on. That was the
only website visited that they were turned off. I have scanned for trojans,
worms, adware, etc. Clean.

If you were on the Internet at all, without a firewall and
without current anti-virus and a fully patched Windows XP,
it only takes a monument to get infected.
Scan in safe mode and see what you find, some viruses turn
the actual scan engine off nut it looks like a scan is
happening.

Tim,

I would get and run Spybot and AdAware SE on your system. Then try
HijackThis to see if your IE has add-ons that might block some functions. Try
dissabling some, one by one.

Any program affecting IE and/or Outlook Express can cause issues with the WU
site.

The check list might be long. Use the search function on this forum to find
similar problems.

Were you able to use the WU site before?

Tim,

I had the same frustrating problem. Finally I tried WU from Start>Help and
Support. It took me directly to WU, the scan for updates was immediate and I
then was able to d/l and install the latest. YMMV!

OldKenGoat,

Thank you for the suggestion, but alas, it did not work. I think that I am
about to format the HD and reinstall everything. If that does not work,
then I will probably use the laptop as firewood this winter, lol.

Thanks again,

Tim

Tim,

Good luck with the reformat and re-installation. A laptop makes for very
expensive (and smelly) firewood!

If you haven't already, consider a back-up of your drive. I use Drive Image
7 and it has saved my butt more times than I care to admit.

Again, good luck!

OldKenGoat,

Thank you for the advice. I think that I will check into it for my other
laptop and desktop. Thank you for your help. It is nice to know that there
are people out there that are willing to help.

Tim
