I had a system crash while preparing to download updates and now the update
client says it cannot search for updates - error code 80073712. I have tried
shutting down the service, deleting files then restarting the service, but to
no avail. Please, what do I do to correct this problem.

TIA for the assistance..

Did you try System Restore ?

" Crystal Ball " Please do explain.. yes.. Vista Ultimate
I will try a system restore... it's a good thing I turned it back on a few
days ago.. and.. that it seems to work better in Vista. It was right inthe
middle of scanning when something faulted the system and everything froze.. I
will do another vir scan tonight before bed. Malware/Spyware is clean.

Ok... System restore is not fixing the problem.. and frankly.. I forgot to
turn it back on about a day too late.. apparently.. had meant to only clear
initial points to save system space.. * sighs * What do I do now? and what do
you mean by " The Crystal Ball " please?

I have several Crystal balls and when I gaze into them, I still cannot
determine the future etc. or get answers to my questions.

Seriously, in other words, unless you state what OS you're using, then
responders are only guessing, hence gazing into a crystal ball to seek the
information you forgot to include in your original post.

Welll.... My Bad.. Execpt in the second post.. You know.. My life is busy
as well and sometimes we do forget a few things.. So don't waste the clock
here either with a lot of metaphors and afforisms and junk, ok? .. If a
version number was needed and I neglected.. then simply state instead of
being crass bordering on less fortunate terms.
Thank you TaurArian for speaking plainly..

Windows Type: Vista Ultimate

Windows Version: 6000

Unfortunately not much help for Vista - so if you have to resort to
contacting MS please post back any feedback to assist others -

In the meantime -

The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive
an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows
Update: "0x80073712"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712/en-us

otherwise start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

I had the same problem with Vista Ultimate. Updated fine untill the new
update download on the 8-24-2007. After that would not update and error
80073712. After almost 4 hrs on the phone with Cust. Service And trying to
delete DirtyStore(wasn't there), Shutting down services and renaming Catroot2
and Softwaredistribution no go still. another suggestion was to delete the
pending.xml which gives me a whole new error 800b0100. Cust Service best
advice was to reinstall. I've noticed in catroot2 a file dberr.txt that has
these lines
CatalogDB: 8:59:05 PM 8/29/2007: SyncDB:: AddCatalog: oem5.cat
CatalogDB: 8:59:06 PM 8/29/2007: catdbsvc.cpp at line #1501 encountered
error 0x000003ee
CatalogDB: 9:19:27 PM 8/29/2007: catdbsvc.cpp at line #1363 encountered

error 0x000003ee
CatalogDB: 9:24:31 PM 8/29/2007: catdbsvc.cpp at line #1363 encountered
error 0x000003ee

and

atalogDB: 8:33:31 PM 8/29/2007: SyncDB:: AddCatalog: oem4.cat
CatalogDB: 8:33:31 PM 8/29/2007: catdbsvc.cpp at line #1363 encountered
error 0x000003ee
CatalogDB: 8:33:31 PM 8/29/2007: SyncDB:: AddCatalog: oem5.cat
CatalogDB: 8:33:31 PM 8/29/2007: catdbsvc.cpp at line #1501 encountered
error 0x000003ee
CatalogDB: 8:33:31 PM 8/29/2007: SyncDB:: AddCatalog: oem6.cat

Course I have no idea what that means and guess this weekend i will save
everything and reinstall.
