Windows Update failure - returns error code 80070436

Attempting to apply Windows Update for notified driver for Linksys Wireless
Adapter
Model Wireless -G 2.4 GHZ 802.11g (WUSB54G Version 4) and Windows Update
fails with error code 80070436.

Windows Online help does not display that error code... how can I find out
what the error code means and how do I resolve the failure of the Vista 32
Bit driver update by Windows Update.

Note: adapter is working fine and I previously downloaded and separately
installed the Vista 32 Bit driver (Version 3.1.0.1.01) from the LINKSYS web
site when I initially set up my new Dell C521 which came with Vista
preinstalled in early Feb 2007. USB Adapter has been working fine... but
Windows Update flagged it for an update last week...

I am unable to find any definitive information about error code 80070436
from MS support on via general Internet Web Site Search engines.

I'm getting the exact same problem. I haven't been able to find the answer
yet. I'm thinking it might be an "older" driver so the install recognizes it
and fails. If you click on the update details before you install, it says
the driver was released December 2006. It seems odd it wouldn't be
"published" on windows updates until April 3rd 2007. Maybe this is a bug in
the windows update software or possibly Linksys has come out with a new
driver and some yoyo at Microsoft linked it to the wrong file. That's my
best guess since Microsoft has yet to bless us with a page to look up these
error codes (at least I couldn't find it).

Hi there,

Getting drivers from windows update is not recommanded unless you like
problems.

If your device is not working proper get a driver updatee from the
manufacturers website: if it ain't broke: do not "FIX" it.

This may help.
I get WindowsUpdate_80070436 error when I try to update a wireless adapter
from Realtek using Windows Update. I noticed my driver, downloaded directly
from Realtek, is newer than Windows Update. Wonder ...?

Thanks for the reply. You're right. I fininally figured out the problem.
Windows Vista "auto" installs the wrong driver for the Linksys Wireless
Adapter version WMP54Gv4.1. Then when the "update" was released something
major must have been changed because my wireless card completely failed and
it was a "bit**" to get working. I had to rename the every reference to the
"device name" in the registery in order to get the correct driver to work.
Windows Vista DOES NOT uninstall hardware fully and this is a MAJOR flaw.
Everytime I tried to install the correct MFG driver, before I edited my
registery, a message would tell me a device or service name, "Linksys
Wireless Adapter", was already in use.

Actually .. I did a poor job of explaining this situation


You are indeed correct.. and I had actually ascertained that early in the
process when I got my new PC with Vista on it in Feb 2007. Net of that all
scenario was that I did update the most current driver from the Web site of
the MFG and ulitmately had to manually force an UNINSTALL of the driver that
would not work in order to successfully complete the install of the newest
Wireless Adapter driver.

Later in time.. Microsoft has tried to provide an updated driver... it is
if fact the same driver version/date as the one I already have installed...
that is the real problem Vista and Microsoft Update fail to recognize that I
already have that driver version installed.. and it continues to attempt to
update and fails repeatedly.

Thanks for you help... at this time I am just ignoring the failures.. but
had hoped that someone else might have found a way to get Microsoft Update
back in Synch for the Vista Driver update scenario
