Running windows XP. Unable to perform windows update as "files required to
use Microsoft update are no longer registered or installed on your computer"
You then have two options; one to re-register files or two, get additional
help. I've had this problem on and off for some time and have overcome by
doing a system restore. However, as this is no longer an option I tried to
re-register (first option) but the fails with error 0x8034d007

Next followed Option 2 and read a number of KB articles and other forum info
and done quite a bit to resolve. Latest has been to delete files in
SoftwareDistribution\Download Folder as well as
SoftwareDistribution\EventCache folder.

I've downloaded a fresh copy of the Windows Update Agent
(windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe) and performed a forced install (switch
/wuforce). The Windows Update Agent Installer window shows an install
failure with error code 0x8024d007 - the same error you get by
re-registering !

I'd really appreciate some help and advice getting the update service
working again

Subsequent searching of internet found the answer to my problem - Microsoft
Fix-it 50202. described on Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB 971058 found
at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

I choose the auto fix method but you can choose to fix it yourself.

Everything OK now. Updates working fine.
