Windows Update Failure; Tech Abaondoned Me

Hi,

When trying to access the WindowsUpdate site I am prompted to install the
new version of the WindowsUpdate Software, the install starts fine and gets
all the way through "Registering" 100%, then displays "Error".

It says "the page you are trying to view cannot be displayed" It shows
error 0x800A138F and 0x80070005.

I have searched through the NewsGroup postings but none could solve the
problem.

I searched through the Frequently asked Questions & Find Solutions
categories but none helped either.

I then contacted the Online assisted Support, and they tried to walk through
the steps, but after they all failed, the last response was to use the
"Repair Feature of the XP disc." I tried it and nothing changed, and then
they would not respond back after that, I sent several emails, but they
basically abandoned me.

If anyone could point me in a direction I would be grateful.

Please ensure that:
- you are logged in as a local Administrator;
- you are using Internet Explorer with full rights (and not with restricted
rights such as via "DropMyRights" and similar utilities).

Please disable all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware, download
accelerators, and so on. Does that fix the problem?

I understand that you have already done a full "Repair" re-installation of
Windows (takes up to an hour). Is that correct? If so, the problem will
not be with the installed system files, but might remain in the Registry, as
a repair re-installation does not overwrite all registry entries.

800a138f is a JavaScript error, and suggests that resources required by
JavaScript are missing. Possibly this is due to missing DLL registrations.
Try downloading Dial-a-Fix from http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_beta and
use its repair options for Windows Update, and its re-registration options
for Internet Explorer etc.

If a Repair re-installation has not fixed the problem, then you are very
close to having to re-format the hard disk and install a fresh copy of
Windows. So let's hope someone comes up with a fix for you.

Robin,

Thanks for the reply, yes I did do the "repair" funtcion took about 40
minutes, but everything was still the same.

I forgot to mention that in the Update log, it listed three binary failures.
I don't remember what they were right now(I am on my work computer at the
moment).

I will try the link you posted. I am mostly upset because the "Online
techs," seem to be reading off a set script rather then providing individual
case help, and all the info and suggestions they provide seem to be the same
as in the NewsGroup.

Step 1:
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet
Explorer language option is not empty.
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options"
dialog.

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the
Internet Time and Time Zone. Double click on the date/time in the
notification/system tray area, select Internet Time Tab and then select
update now. If it's not already checked, check automatically synchronize
with an Internet Time Server - WinXP.

Step 2:
Also check these settings:
1. Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say "Enable SSL 2" or
"Enable SSL 3".
4. Uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation"

Step 3:
Also delete Temporary Internet Files
1. Tools > Internet Options > General
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, click OK

Step 4:
1. Tools > Internet Options > Security
2. Click Trusted sites, click Default Level.
Click the Sites button and clear the check box "Require server verification
(https for all sites in this zone."
Now add the following :
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If required, reboot and try Windows Update again. If still no success, have
a look at the following links for more clues.

Well, between TaurArian and Robin's suggestions, the 0x800A138F error has
stopped showing up, but the 0x80070005 remains.

I tried the Dial-A-Fix and it showed some errors it could not fix at this
time.

Also, in the HKEY registry under the AutoUpdate file, the "Full Control" and
"Read" boxes are Grayed out, but checked? Is that the same thing as not
being checked?

The WindowsUpdate folder shows them as Green checkable.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Are you logged on as an Administrator?

Did you check out "Regmon" to see what keys have "access denied"

TaurArian,

Yes, I am logged in as an administrator(all users have full access, no
limits set) In addition I also created another user account and tried it that
way with no success.

As for the Regmon Utility, I do not locate any "Access Denied" results.
There are however "Not Found","No More Entries","Buffer Overflow"s in the
Result column. I am not sure where to go with this information?

Thanks for your replies.

In which case, it might be a file-system "Access Denied" rather than a
Registry one. Try using Sysinternals "FileMon" in a similar manner during
the update, to see if there are some file or folder permissions set wrongly.

Online Support not responding to you is unacceptable. I'll bring this
info to the attention of someone who will probably want to investigate
this, STurbo. Hang in there ...
