Hi Quatermass,
Sorry, I don't have that particular hotfix, but since the GUID referenced in
the DCOM error points to BITS in the registry, the BITS error is the main
problem.
Try to start the BITS service manually via the Services shortcut in
Administrative Tools. If you receive the service specific error -2147024894,
there a couple of recommendations for you to try to see if either resolves
the problem:
1) Open the registry editor and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\BackupRestore
See if there is a FilesNotToBackup subkey under BackupRestore. If not, add
the FilesNotToBackup key. Now see if you can successfully start BITS. If so,
try the Windows Update site and see if you can now successfully download the
updates.
2) Via Windows Explorer, navigate to:
Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader
Delete the two files in the Downloader folder, or delete the entire
Downloader folder. Now see if you can successfully start BITS (the folder
will be recreated when BITS is started). If so, try the Windows Update site
and see if you can now successfully download the updates.
Regards,

I'm using Windows 2000 sp4 and recently if I use the Windows Update web
page I get a list of updates, I can start the update process but it
fails to validate the file download and stops.
I've examined the log files and I believe the following hotfix
will fix my problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q841037
"NTLM authentication may stop unexpectedly in Windows 2000"
The only trouble is, Microsoft want £250 ($450 US)to give me this
hotfix due to them having dropped free support.
So has anyone got this hotfix and could supply me with it?
Errors in the Log file I'm getting :
System Event:
Source : Service Control Manager
EventID: 7024
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with
service-specific error 2147942402.

This ID above is the background Intelligent service.
