Windows update files; constant browser refresh message

Windows XP Home Edition SP2, Internet Explorer
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Internet Explorer keeps asking for page refresh (giving on various page
links.

Can no longer get Windows updates as keep getting 'page not available' but
by refreshing page site will come up.Can keep refreshing until I get to
'Express or Custom?' update screen but can get no further because refresh
keeps taking back to the 'Express or Custom?' page.

Followed the MS recommended links to fix the error number recieived but
none of them have resolved the problem.

It's getting so most Web sites only come up this way. After a page not
found, click refresh brings up a page. Commonly get 'server reset' messages
and downloads are interrupted.

Have run Trend Micro Housecall, Adaware, Spybot, Microsoft Defender and all
come up clean.
Disabled, and finally uninstalled McAfee Security Suite 10.

The log shows a proxy server listed. Are you running one ? If not, open
Internet Options in the Control Panel. Click the Connections tab, then
LAN Settings. Uncheck the box under Proxy server. Click OK.
Now click the General tab. Under Temporary Internet Files click the
Settings button.
For the " Check for newer versions of stored pages ", set it to
" Every visit to the page ". Click OK, then OK once more to close
Internet Options.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
