Windows Update: "The following items failed to install" ... KB828

My "Windows Update" indicates two Critical Security Updates needing install
on my Win2000 system:

- KB828749
- KB824105

When I attempt to install them, Win Update tells me "No Updates Were
Installed; The following items failed to install. To try installing them
again, click Review and install updates."

When I try to install them again, either together or individually, I get the
same error message.

What now?
